The Global Command Search Tool in Global Mapper

Written by: Amanda Lind

Global Mapper® is a powerful GIS software with a range of tools for complete geospatial processes. With all these tools, you may wonder where your favorite tool was, or how to find a new one. The program’s robust toolset includes functionality for multiple data types, industry uses, and user requests. While navigating the interface is simple — for example, Vector tools are stored in the Vector Analysis menu — Global Mapper v26.0 includes a new tool to make finding your favorite tools even easier. To save you from having to remember exactly which menu tools are saved in (is it Advanced Selection or Advanced Feature Creation??), we’ve created the Global Command Search tool.

New in v26.0, Global Command Search allows users to search Global Mapper’s built-in commands to find the tool to suit their data needs. Command Search serves as a toolbox for Global Mapper. This dockable window organizes all the tools and commands available in Global Mapper into logical categories. Browsed as a tree structure or searched with a dynamic filter search found at the top of the window, the Global Command Search makes it easy to find and run the tool you need without browsing through the toolbars and menus.

*Tip: Find yourself using the same tools over and over? Use the Favorites toolbar, or make a shortcut key.

Global Command Search

No need to search for the search tool! Global Command Search can be opened from the File Toolbar, File menu, or using the CTRL + F keyboard shortcut in the context of the main view of the program.

Searching

Navigate through an organized list of tools/options in the tree structure, or type the name of a tool in the search bar to filter the list of tools in the toolbox.

Highlight Tools Applicable to Your Loaded Data Type

Want to explore more of what’s possible in Global Mapper? Enable the Filter button to bold the tools in the Search window that can be used with the data currently loaded in your workspace. Toggle this option On to target and browse only the tools you can currently activate and use based on the loaded data in Global Mapper. This helps to not only find the tool you are looking for but also find additional or similar tools to fit your needs.

The Filter option only bolds the tools compatible with the loaded data, such as the line and area vector features loaded in this image.

Launch Tools and Search Directly from the Toolbox

A double-click will open/activate a tool directly from the Toolbox. Single-click on a topic to highlight it allowing you to click the question mark icon to open the Help page relevant to the selected tool.

  • Did You Know? The built-in Help Pages in Global Mapper are the same content as the Knowledge Base.

Toggle ON/OFF Settings

For ON/OFF type tools (ie Hillshading, Pan, Info Tips, etc.) an ON/OFF status is displayed in the toolbox entry. Double-click a setting marked (ON) or (OFF) to toggle it. Note that this includes settings that are available in the workspace such as those found in right-click and Layer menus. Other settings can be adjusted from within the Configuration Menu.
