Mars Hill, Maine – April 1, 2015 — Using Global Mapper’s LiDAR Module, a lucky Maine potato farmer was able to determine the location of his largest potatoes in his 2014 crop and in doing so, stumbled across the largest naturally grown spud ever recorded with LiDAR. Lucas Greenwood, the current record holder of the World’s Largest Potato found using LiDAR Data, measured his tater in at 8lbs 12 ounces, beating out the previous champion located in Nottinghamshire, England. Blue Marble’s geospatial data manipulation, visualization and conversion solutions are used worldwide by thousands of GIS analysts at software, oil and gas, mining, civil engineering, surveying, and technology companies, as well as governmental and university organizations.
Global Mapper is an affordable and easy-to-use GIS application that is capable of displaying, converting, and analyzing virtually any type of geospatial data. The LiDAR Module can process billions of points of LiDAR data into terrain models or surfaces with flexible thinning or aggregation tools. The 3D display tools in Global Mapper enable users to create 3D fly-through presentations and perform in-depth visual analysis. The LiDAR module also has excellent automatic reclassification and feature extraction tools. Combined with the path profile tool for cross section editing Global Mapper can address virtually any LiDAR post-processing challenge.
“I was viewing some new LiDAR data in Blue Marble’s Global Mapper software, and I saw this pattern on the map. Didn’t think they were spuds, but boy was I wrong.” stated Mr. Greenwood, a third-generation potato farmer in Aroostook County. “My cousin Roger is a pilot and was kind enough to fly this survey with one of them new fangled LiDAR cameras strapped to the belly of his plane. We were able to get the data and easily look at it in Global Mapper and low and behold, there were spuds-a-plenty in this one spot. I dug up some spuds and found this here nine pounder. Turned out to be a record, yuh. Kinda looks a little like my cocker spaniel, Millie.”
