Thank you for visiting the Blue Marble Geographics web site and for taking the time to learn about our company.
Blue Marble Geographics is an innovative mapping software company based in Hallowell, Maine, a small community about sixty miles north of Portland. The company was founded in 1993 in Gardiner, Maine by Jeff Cole, an eager and enthusiastic technologist with a vision for designing and developing creative solutions for complex geospatial challenges. The Geographic Calculator, which was built to run on Windows 3.1, was our first product. It offered a straightforward toolkit for converting and reprojecting spatial data and it quickly developed a well-earned reputation as an accurate and reliable data processing solution. The Geographic Calculator was the solid foundation upon which all of our products and services were developed. Today, we continue to create easy-to-use, yet powerful software solutions and services for geospatial data conversion and a full suite of GIS software. Over the years, our customer base has grown to hundreds of thousands of users worldwide and our products are widely regarded as the leading software tools in the GIS industry.
Being a successful software company is never easy, but we prospered through the economic slow-down of the early 90's, the whirlwind of the dot-com era and the subsequent dot-bomb, the resurgence of tech companies, and even through the current economic challenges. It is noteworthy that the company has prospered and gained a worldwide following while remaining true to our roots in Maine. We are proud to serve our global customer base with a customer-first mentality.
Aside from the release of the first application, other big milestones were the change of ownership to private investors in 2004 with my subsequent appointment as Company President while Jeff moved on to bigger and better things. Our acquisition of Global Mapper, LLC at the end of 2011 was the next game changing event for our company. This acquisition quintupled our user-base and brought the renowned Mike Childs, the developer of Global Mapper, on board as a Blue Marble employee. 2012 was an extremely busy but rewarding year as we merged the two companies, broadened our reach even further and moved our offices to Hallowell.
We are proud of the fact that, on some small level, our successful and growing company provides the basis for a challenging and appealing career for our employees. It is important to us to contribute to this great state's burgeoning economy and to help stop the infamous brain drain. Blue Marble is proud to be a technology company in a beautiful state, known around the world as a special place to live or visit.
As a business, our goal is to continue to grow and expand while offering great career opportunities for our employees and of course, never forgetting our customer-centered development and support.
We endeavor to create a place of work that is comfortable, friendly, and stimulating. We are a team of tech folks who look to the positive whether things are tough or easy-going. We strive to be successful, and we feel that there is nothing wrong with enjoying the ride. If you're going to spend the majority of your week at a place, it had better be a place you enjoy!
Blue Marble embraces and thrives on a philosophy of customer-focused product management, development, and sales. Over the years, we have learned that our users are our best sources of creativity and we will never underestimate the importance of this relationship. Customer questions are addressed with courtesy and integrity, and, understanding the deadlines that our customers often face, we pride ourselves on responding to inquiries within hours, not days. Furthermore, if you have a suggestion for improving the current version of the software, we encourage you to let us know and your feature request will be considered immediately. If possible we'll get you a special build right away, if there's more lifting involved will consider it for the next release. This customer-focused development process is truly unique in the GIS community.
