Global Mapper 17.2 Released with New Map Book Creation Tool and Cutaway Terrain View

Hallowell, Maine – May 17, 2016 — Blue Marble Geographics (bluemarblegeo.com) is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Global Mapper version 17.2. This upgrade to the version 17 release includes functional enhancements throughout all aspects of the software and it introduces an array of new tools, countless upgrades to existing components, and performance improvements to increase efficiency and productivity. Significant enhancements offered in this release include a new Map Layout tool for designing a map book or atlas; support for pan sharpening color imagery; a new terrain cutaway view for integrating a linear Path Profile into the 3D View, several new image cropping options; and performance improvements throughout the application.

Blue Marble’s geospatial data manipulation, visualization and conversion solutions are used worldwide by thousands of GIS analysts at software, oil and gas, mining, civil engineering, surveying, and technology companies, as well as governmental and university organizations.

Global Mapper is an affordable, powerful, yet easy-to-use GIS application capable of displaying, analyzing, and exporting virtually every type of geospatial data. The software offers intuitive tools for creating, converting, reprojecting, editing, cropping, tiling and mosaicking datasets of any size, and it provides a surprising array of powerful analysis tools, including watershed and terrain analysis, raster calculation, and volumetric measurement. The release of version 17.2 is further evidence of Blue Marble’s customer-focused development strategy in which virtually all of the new and upgraded features and functions can be directly attributed to input and suggestions from our worldwide user community.

The new Map Layout function in Global Mapper was introduced in version 17.0 and has undergone significant upgrades in the intervening releases. New in version 17.2 is a powerful tool for designing a tiled map book in which all of the pages share a consistent layout structure. This map tile array can be exported to a single PDF file or printed directly. Also added in this version is support for macros in text elements and the option to save multiple map layouts in a single workspace. To improve the quality of loaded imagery, the latest release includes a tool for pan sharpening color imagery using higher resolution panchromatic (grayscale) imagery. The 3D View in Global Mapper now offers the option to display a cutaway view of the terrain. This new display function renders the Path Profile derived from a simple line feature into the terrain and offers a unique perspective of variations in topography.

When downloading imagery or any other raster data from Global Mapper’s expansive online data services, users can now accurately determine the extent to display by limiting the downloaded data to a selected polygon, A further raster processing enhancement is the option to invert the cropping procedure, in which the imagery outside a defined cropping boundary is retained leaving a hole in the center.

Version 17.2 paves the way for the upcoming release of Global Mapper Mobile. Several new tools have been added to Global Mapper to facilitate the exchange of maps and data between the desktop application and the iOS app. More details will be forthcoming at the time of release.

“One request we have consistently received over the years is improved map publishing capabilities,” stated Blue Marble’s President, Patrick Cunningham. “Version 17.2 is the culmination of the new Map Layout tool that adds a lot of flexibility and improvement for creating cartographically pleasing maps in Global Mapper so our users can again save money by completing an entire project from data processing to presentation.”

Blue Marble Application Specialists will be conducting a live webinar on Thursday, May 26 during which they will showcase the highlights of this release. This hour-long presentation is scheduled to begin at 2:00 pm (U.S. Eastern Time) and it will provide an opportunity to both see the latest tools and to ask questions about the new functionality.
