Global Mapper Workshop
Tue Mar 5, 2024
Global Mapper is universally recognized as a leader in the ever-widening field of 3D mapping technology. As lidar and other point cloud formats have become increasingly ubiquitous, the software has evolved and adapted to meet the changing needs and demands of the worldwide GIS community.
During this four-hour workshop, we will introduce and explore a broad range of Global Mapper Pro’s 3D and terrain analysis functionality. After a brief overview of the principal features and functions of the software, we will begin our journey through Global Mapper Pro’s 3D capabilities by taking a look at Pixels to Points. This photogrammetric tool uses Structure from Motion (SfM) technology to analyze overlapping, drone-collected images and ultimately to create a 3D point cloud.
As we continue, we will introduce a series of point cloud processing workflows designed to improve the quality of the data. This includes a variety of filtering and editing techniques as well as segmentation, a recent addition to Global Mapper Pro that automatically recognizes clusters of points that collectively represent a distinct feature or structure. To conclude the first section of the workshop, we will explore several point reclassification procedures for automatically identifying and reclassifying points that represent ground, buildings, and even custom or user-defined features.
In the second half of the workshop, we will turn our attention to Global Mapper Pro’s extensive terrain analysis functionality. To begin, we will transform a point cloud into a raster Digital Elevation Model (DEM), which will be the basis of many of the subsequent workflows. Next, we will generate contours and breaklines to delineate patterns in the terrain. We will then follow a series of workflows that involve volume calculation and terrain modification, including the recently introduced Terrain Painting tool. Finally, we will conclude the workshop by exploring several options for capturing and sharing terrain and other 3D datasets, including 3D flythrough recording and 3D PDF creation.
This concise workshop will provide a perfect introduction to the powerful 3D mapping functionality in Global Mapper Pro, and is equally well suited for existing or prospective users of the software. Pre-registration is required and seats are limited so be sure to reserve your place as soon as possible.
Learning Objectives:
- Attendees will have an opportunity to explore the latest 3D tools in Global Mapper Pro
- Attendees will understand the importance of cleaning up and improving the quality of lidar data as an essential prerequisite for any meaningful 3D analysis.
- Attendees will learn how to create a DEM and how to use this as the basis for a variety of terrain analysis procedures.
